Reading Strategies
We will work on using sequence of events to retell a story. We will also Use visualizing and wondering to help us understand the story better.

Please continue to practice reading every day. When reading please continue to ask your child story structure questions (character, setting, problem, solution). 

Math
Next week we will continue practicing place value. We will discuss ones and tens.  

Monkey of the week
Last week’s “Monkey of the week” was Fady! Fady’s favorite subjects are Reading, Math, science, social studies and Music. His favorite food is Hamburgers and Pizza. Congratulations to Fady on his awesome week!

Notes/reminders

I will be collecting December reading journals after winter break. The students who have completed their journals will receive a certificate for a free personal pizza from Pizza Hut. 

The Flu season is upon us. We are doing everything we can to prevent the spreading of germs within the classroom. There is Germ-X located around the room, wet wipes are available and the desks are being wiped down/cleaned every night.  Please encourage your student to use these. Feel free to send a personal hand sanitizer bottle for your student (the little travel bottles). 


We will return to school January 6th.

Martin Luther King Day will be January 20th. There will be no school.

We will also take our second round of Maps tests January 7th-9th.

There will be an early dismissal January 15th.

We have been practicing making 10. Please practice counting by tens and making groups of tens.


Notes/reminders

Please continue to have your student fill out their December calendars over break.

Our holiday party will be held on Friday, December 20th. First grade will not be doing a student gift exchange this year. Each teacher will be buying gifts for their class.

Reading Strategies
Next week we will continue to discuss our reading strategies. Please begin to discuss story structure with your child (Character, problem, solution, setting).

We will also continue practicing visualizing. When you read with your child ask them what pictures they see in their head/imagination.

Math
Next week we will begin to discuss counting with groups of ten and ones. Please practice this skill at home as well. One suggestion is counting things around the house. Have your child make groups of ten. Then have your child count them (counting by ten).

Monkey of the week
Last week’s “Monkey of the week” was Kian! Kian’s favorite subjects are Popcorn words, Math, Gym and Music. His favorite food is a pear. Congratulations to Kian on his awesome week.


Reminders


Snow is on its way! Students will need to bring snow boots and snow pants (if possible) to play outside for recess. If a student does not have boots they will need to stay on the blacktop. Thank you!

Newsletter

Week: November 25th– November 26th


Next week we will only be in school Monday the 25th and Tuesday the 26th. During these two days, students will review and practice previously learned concepts in both reading and Math. Students will also have time for some fun holiday projects.

Last week’s “Monkey of the week” was Zach! Zach’s favorite subjects are Gym, Computers and Reading. His favorite food is pancakes. Congratulations to Zach on his awesome week.

Reading Strategies
We have been discussing many reading and comprehension strategies over the past few months. Next week we will reinforce these techniques and strengthen some of the student’s skills.

Math
Next week we will work on finding equations that are equal and not equal, finding different ways to make 20, and we will also review/strengthen our previously learned math concepts.

Chunky Monkey- Find chunks in the word that you recognize
Flip Flop Froggy- Flip the vowel sound (first try the short vowel sound then the long vowel sound).

Math
Students have been practicing fact families and related facts. Please continue to practice these strategies (ex. 2+3=5  5-2=3).

Please also continue to practice math facts. Knowing the fast facts by memory will help the students with upcoming strategies.

Monkey of the week
Last week’s “Monkey of the week” was Filip! Filip’s favorite subject is Gym. His favorite foods are pizza and orange chicken. His favorite books are about Bugs. Congratulations to Filip on his awesome week!

Reading Strategies
Next week we will continue practicing or reading strategies. We will also introduce “Turtle Talk”. This strategy allows students to slowly sound out the word. Once the student identifies all the sounds in the word, they can blend them together.

Math
Next week in Math we will discuss the strategy of making ten to add. We will also move into subtraction strategies “count back” (this strategy uses a number line) and “think addition to subtract”.

At this point in the year we would like students to begin mastering their Fast Facts. Students should begin to memorize addition facts with a sum of 1-10 (ex. 2+5).

Notes
Our Halloween festivities are scheduled for Thursday, October 31st. The children’s costume parade will begin between 1:40-1:45 p.m. outside the school (weather permitting). Our classroom party will begin at 2:00 p.m. Students should bring their costumes to school that day in a bag with their name clearly marked on it. Please try to make their costumes easy to put on over their regular clothes. Makeup cannot be applied at school and toy weapons are not allowed.
Also, children are not allowed to bring candy or edible treats to pass out to their classmates on this day. The students will be having a small treat and drink in the classroom during the party. We also have students who have various food allergies in our class.
Thank you for your cooperation in this matter!

This is a very challenging test for first graders. I suggest adding extra practice time this week.

Reading Strategies
Next week we will learn/practice the strategies “Stretchy snake” and “Elephant ears”

Stretchy snake- This strategy teaches the students to stretch out the sounds of the words. Students will be able to hear all the sounds of the word.

Elephant ears- this strategy teaches students to listen to the word they read. If it does not sound correct, they need to try it again.

Math
Next week in Math we will continue strengthening our Mathematics skills. Here are some of the skills we will be learning/strengthening:
-         Doubles facts (ex. 4+4)
-         Doubles plus or minus one (students need to know their doubles facts for this strategy!)
-         Add ten more

Please continue to practice math facts with your child.
