Reading Strategies
Next week we will discuss how to “Monitor and Clarify”. When reading with your student encourage them to stop and check to make sure they understand what they read. If they do not understand they should reread.

We will also introduce “Sequencing”. Encourage your student to pay attention to the order of events. At the end of the story, discuss what happened first, second, and so on.

Math
Next week we will begin chapter 8. We will discuss “Data and Graphs”. The concepts in this chapter include Sorting, Classifying and picture graphs.  Chapters 8 and 9 will be a combined test on December 18th.

Monkey of the week
Last week’s “Monkey of the week” was Gabija! Gabija’s favorite subjects are Gym and Math. Her favorite places to go are Disney World and Gymnastics. Congratulations to Gabija on her awesome week!
Notes/reminders

Santa’s workshop will be held on Wednesday, December 5th. Your student will be able to purchase holiday items on this day. Please have your students money concealed and labeled with their name and their teachers name.

Progress reports will be sent home on December 7th. Your student will only receive a progress report if they are “not meeting” in a subject area.

Our holiday party will be held on Friday, December 21st. First grade will not be doing a student gift exchange this year. Each teacher will be buying gifts for their class.

Winter break will begin Monday, December 24th. There will be no school.

Reading Strategies
We will discuss the comprehension skill ‘Compare and Contrast’. When you read with your student, ask them to compare and contrast different aspects of the story (ex. characters). You can also have them compare and contrast different books. Help them look for similarities and differences in the story.

Math
We will continue chapter 7. We will discuss related addition/subtraction facts, fact families and completing a chart using a given rule (Example add/subtract 3). The chapter 7 test will be on Friday, November 30th.

Monkey of the week
Last week’s “Monkey of the week” was Julianna! Julianna’s favorite subjects are Math, Gym, Recess, Computers and Lunch. Her favorite movie is the Pokémon movie and she likes to catch Ladybugs. Congratulations to Julianna on her awesome week.

Reminders

Thanksgiving break is November 21st-November 25th.
(Classes will resume Monday, November 26th)

Please continue to help your student fill out their November reading journal. I suggest reading at least 15 minutes every night. After you read, please write down how many minutes your student or you read (please write this on the calendar) and the title of the book (please write this on the last page). There is also an activity sheet in the reading journal, this sheet has two sides. Please complete these with your student before they turn it in at the end of the month.

Please make sure your student wears (or brings) a pair of gym shoes every day. They will not be able to participate in Gym without proper footwear.

Notes:

NEXT WEEK WE WILL BE REVIEWING PREVIOUS CONCEPTS AND DOING SOME THANKSGIVING THEMED PROJECTS.

Our class has won another Lunch in the classroom!!! We will have our lunch in the classroom Tuesday, November 20th. Your student will be able to get hot lunch if they order it. I will also be providing popcorn for the party. If there are any concerns please let me know. Thank you!

Reading Strategies
Next week we will review ‘how to question a book’ prior to reading. We will also practice ‘drawing conclusions’. Remind students that the author doesn't always explain everything in the story. Have your student use story clues and real life examples to draw conclusions about the book.

Math

There is no school on Monday, November 12th for Veteran’s day.

Your student received their November reading journal. Please try to read at least 15 minutes every night. After you read, please write down how many minutes your student or you read (please write this on the calendar) and the title of the book (please write this on the last page). There is also an activity sheet in the reading journal, this sheet has two sides. Please complete these with your student before they turn it in at the end of the month.

Don’t forget to sign and turn in your student’s conference envelope!

We will only have two days of practice in school. Please practice these words with your student. I am sending the letter scrambles home today so you can use them to practice.  

Reading Strategies
Next week we will discuss how to question a book prior to reading. Before reading a book, have your student look at all of the pictures. Allow time for your student to ask questions about the pictures before reading. After reading the book, ask your student if the story answered their questions.

Math
We will continue Chapter 6 (subtraction strategies to 12). The concepts we are discussing include using a number line to count back and relating addition problems to subtraction problems (fact families). The chapter 6 test will be on Friday, November 9th.

Your student received their November reading journal. Please try to read at least 15 minutes every night. After you read, please write down the title of the book and how many minutes your student or you read. There is also an activity sheet in the reading journal, this sheet has two sides. Please complete these with your student before they turn it in at the end of the month.

Your student received “list one” of our popcorn/sight words. Please practice these words with your student. Start with a few words. When your student knows the first couple words, begin to add a few at a time. 

The Halloween party was a hit! The students had a great time! Thank you to everyone involved, your hard work is greatly appreciated!  

Monkey of the week
Last week’s “Monkey of the week” was Michael! Michael’s favorite subjects are Science, Math and Reading. His favorite books are the “Fly Guy” books. Congratulations to Michael on his awesome week!

There will be no “Monkey of the week” next week. We will continue the following week.
